Lumelang, metsoalle oa ka!
It has begun: the excitement, the butterflies, the twisting I feel within myself as I think about what these next seven months hold for my life. Am I really going to South Africa? Am I really going to take bucket baths? Hike another mountain? Speak an African language? Eat strange, unfamiliar food? See stars that I've never seen before? Wow.
I really don't know what to think at this point. Just two weeks ago I could barely contain my excitement as I thought about the cultural experiences that lay before me. I've always been in love with the diversity that surrounds me and eager to taste and see what the world has to offer... but this? This is huge - is it strange that I'm just now realizing that? My feelings leading up to this trip have been an adventure in itself. Curiosity, intrigue, indifference, excitement, nerves... oof! What have I gotten myself into?
This summer is one of preparation and discipline. I need to keep a strong mind, wrestle control over my emotions, and push my body to its limits. South Africa will be an intense cross-cultural experience... there's no doubt about that. I need to be ready. My plan of action includes reading, reflection, devotion, language practice, exercise, hiking, and keeping an open mind as well as a positive attitude. And on top of all that I also need to figure out what to pack!
I invite you to join me as I begin this breathtaking journey. Struggles, challenges, adventures, and accomplishments... this is South Africa.
Countdown to take-off: 106 days
